Swansea Community Farm – Play Scheme and Summer Fun
This summer, Swansea Community Farm teamed up with the Penderi community to bring exciting play schemes and hands-on activities to local families. Through a series of outdoor educational sessions, volunteer days, and community events, children and adults alike had the chance to reconnect with nature and improve their green spaces.
Volunteers of all ages were also vital to the success of these summer activities. They took part in litter-picking, gardening projects, and the Big Butterfly Count, helping to make local green spaces more inviting for people and wildlife alike. As one participant put it, “We all worked together as a family,” reflecting the sense of unity and purpose that these events fostered.
One of the most impactful initiatives took place in the three local primary schools, where parents and children worked together to improve the schools’ outdoor areas. These projects encouraged families to develop a love for their local green spaces while learning about the environment. Swansea Community Farm also organised summer playschemes with the help of local Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) and local Penderry Ward Councillors. These outdoor events aimed to foster a sense of belonging while gathering feedback from participants on how to improve their green spaces.
The summer fun didn’t stop there. Young people had the opportunity to participate in a two-night residential camp where they learned bushcraft skills, explored local wildlife, and created lasting memories around the campfire. They made cord from stinging nettles, walked through nature, and bonded over their shared experiences. The camp offered a safe and exciting environment for young people to connect with each other and the natural world.
The focus was on environmental sustainability, learning green skills, and strengthening relationships within the community—while having lots of fun in the process!
