Community Facilities and Provisions

Understanding what facilities already exist and are valued by local people will mean that organisations can start to make useful contributions to support, expand and remove pressure or barriers on these services and facilities.

Penderi has a number of established community facilities including:

Sitting just outside of the Penderi Masterplan boundary are projects and community facilities, that are used and valued by local people, including:

104 Broughton Avenue was a drop in space led by local people for over 5 years. This space has been renovated into a shared workspace and community space, and opened to the public in July 2022.

Information from local GP surgeries and the NHS, suggest that providing local opportunities for self-care and wellness could improve health and wellbeing, resulting in a reduction on the need for medical help. For example, a high number of local people are prescribed medication for stress and anxiety, but there are limited opportunities locally to learn and practice natural coping skills to deal with anxiety or stress. Such as, mindfulness classes, talking therapies or physical exercise.

Blaenymaes Drop In Centre Volunteers have already started to respond to this gap, through partnership work with The Wallich, to provide talking therapy once a week at the centre.

Ty Forest Resource Hub provide a weekly youth club in the community Centre, and support individuals who find themselves in crisis situation.

Outdoor green spaces are already being considered in terms of improving provision for increased sense of great wellbeing and physical health. Blaeymaes Drop In Centre have run multiple projects during 2020 and 2021 to get neighbours out and about in their green spaces together.

There are issues of fly tipping in the community, which is frustrating for a lot of local people, who are already actively working to clear up these spaces through litter picking and increased use. However, to really combat this issue, local people need the support of big organisations such as Swansea Council and the Police. This regeneration programme will enable this to happen.

If you are already running a community service or project, that we haven’t mentioned here, or if you are just starting your idea and would like to link in with the regeneration plans and opportunities, contact the Community Team at Pobl:
