Creating an economically resilient neighbourhood
Economically resilient neighbourhood
There are lots of local businesses in Penderi, like the institution that is Mr Sings corner shop and post office. There are also lots of small cottage industries at home. For example, hairdressers who have built small salons in their back gardens to people producing crafts sold online and through local craft fairs.
The current design of public spaces and low footfall means that business owners have a challenge to make enough income to survive.
The vans parked up in the area in the evenings show a healthy number of talented trades people and engineers live locally.
The large organisations committed to Penderi have agreed to relook at the way they buy services so that they prioritise local people, local jobs and support for small to medium size enterprises. The development and investment opportunities linked to this programme, will support local businesses and trades people to develop and grow, offering more employment for local people and providing a wider range of local services.
All large contracts bring community benefits with them and opportunities for training and employment. For example, the Penderi Energy Project is working with Gower College to build local skills in this new green technology sector. Green technology is a rapidly growing industry and these opportunities in Swansea will mean local young people have the right skill set, confidence and passion to create well paid careers.
By committing to the Penderi Masterplan, all local landowners are able to look more creatively at the future use of available land, and how this can have the most positive impact on local employment opportunities, access to new services and support local makers and skilled trades people to create sustainable incomes and employment opportunities.
If you are a small business owner, trades person, looking for work or wanting to take the leap and start your own business, we would like to hear from you.
